Featured Speaker: Dr. Richard E. Young

Professor Emeritus of Rhetoric and English Literature, Carnegie Mellon University

This year, we welcome back our own former Department of English Head and one of the founders of Carnegie Mellon’s Rhetoric program, Professor Richard Young. Young’s contributions to the field are numerous, including hundreds of essays and papers that presented pioneering research on writing as an epistemic process of rhetorical inquiry. His landmark work, Rhetoric, Discovery and Change published with Alton Becker and Kenneth Pike, is still viewed as an important model in composition research. In addition to founding the first Ph.D. program in Rhetoric, Young is also one of the organizing members of the Rhetoric Society of America.

At our symposium, he will present a rhetorical perspective on disciplinary literacy, drawing from his research on writing in the disciplines at Carnegie Mellon University.
