Featured Speaker: Dr. Abdul Gabbar Al-Sharafi
On Friday, June 16, we will hear from Dr. Abdul Gabbar Al-Sharafi. about the English
curriculum standards in Doha, Qatar. Dr. Al-Sharafi is the Head of the English Department in the
Curriculum Standards Office for the Education Institute of Supreme Education Council in the
State of Qatar. He acts as consultant, supervisor, coach, and mentor for English teachers
in the new Qatari Independent Schools. These schools are part of a very ambitious national
educational reform project that aims to put Qatar among the leading nations
of the world in the area of educations.
Dr. Al-Sharafi's description of his work:
My job is one of the leading positions within the Education Institute, which oversees the
establishment of new independent but government-funded schools. I am particularly based in the
Curriculum Standards Office which developed internationally benchmarked curriculum standards for
four core subjects; English, Arabic, Math and Science. My duties include educating teachers of
English in Qatari independent schools on these standards, training them on various aspects of
standard implementation, giving them support in the form of mentoring through school
visits and classroom observation and feedback meetings. My job involves a great deal
of strategic planning and policy making in the form of plans on disseminating the culture of
curriculum standards in the Qatari Society. My job also involves overseeing the process of
assessment. Although this is not part of the Curriculum Standards Office responsibilities, yet we have a
role in ensuring that national assessments are closely aligned with the curriculum standards that
have been developed for the four subjects.
