The Story Behind the Story Project
When people tell us the "story behind the story" about a situation, they give us a glimpse of their "situated knowledge" - a kind of knowledge that is rooted in experience and context, in personal and cultural history. Such stories can reveal how people use their distinctive social and cultural experience to read new situations and solve problems in the world of work.

The Story Behind the Story Project collects real-life stories of work from a variety of work places and small communities‹from a construction site, to a police department, from a university, to an urban church. Because these story tellers pull us into a dilemma they faced, invite us to predict a response, then let us compare ours and theirs, these stories uncover the often unrecognized problem-solving, the silent situated knowledge of many teens and adults. And they may give us insight into our own.

The Story Bank is a growing collection of these problem-facing accounts that might help you further your own inquiry into the culture of work‹and what it is really like to be a waitress, a foreman, and a teaching assistant.

Join the Dialogue invites you to interact with the stories‹write in your predictions, see those of other readers, and reflect on what those differences reveal.
