The English Department provides four years of full tuition support for full-time LCS students pursuing the Ph.D. In addition, Ph.D. students teach in undergraduate courses at CMU, earning a yearly stipend. The teaching load is one course per semester. A competitive dissertation fellowship is also available that provides Ph.D. candidates with a stipend while they work full-time on their dissertations.

Of course, federal loan programs—interest deferred while in school—provide supplemental income. The University also offers no-interest, short term emergency loans to needy students. See the CMU Financial Aid Guide for complete information on these and other programs.
