In classical Greece, Rhetoric was the art of discovery and persuasion that shaped democracy and educated philosopher-kings. In its dramatic 20th century resurgence, contemporary Rhetoric has expanded the scope of English studies with its interdisciplinary approach to discourse and the arts of inquiry, interpretation, and communication. It remains an unparalleled foundation for an academic or professional career.

The small number of students admitted to the MA in Rhetoric creates a collaborative and interdisciplinary atmosphere at CMU. Students are able to take courses across programs in the English Department and in other departments, and to work closely with advisors to design a plan of study to suit their interests in theory, research, and teaching.

The MA in Rhetoric is an ideal background for specialized doctoral study in many areas.  However, anyone wishing to do doctoral work in Carnegie Mellon's Ph.D. programs should apply directly to those programs. Although MA work at CMU may be helpful, admission to the doctoral programs requires a separate application.

Sarah Rubin (MA in Rhetoric, 2007) receives the presitigous Fulbright
scholarship!
