The Center is named in honor of the founder of the creative writing program, Gladys Schmitt, a distinguished poet and novelist. She taught at Carnegie Institute of Technology from 1942 until her death in 1972. She took a genuine interest in her students’ development, even holding literary salons in her home to help create a community of writers. The Schmitt Center gives our creative writing students a literary salon of their own where they can read, write, and discuss their work.
The Gladys Schmitt Creative Writing Center (or, “The Glad,” as the students call it) is designed for a variety of uses. First, it functions as a studio space for student writers. Four computers are provided for student use, along with a laser printer, and these computers are equipped with special software for screenwriters and students in Editing and Publishing.
In addition, the space functions as a library. Included in this library is a wide assortment of literary journals for students to read and research possible markets for their own writing. In addition, the library stocks books by current and former faculty, Adamson Award speakers and visiting writers, alumni books and journals, honors thesis projects, campus literary publications, and reference books for writers.
The display cases outside the entrance feature recent books by alumni, faculty, visiting writers, and Carnegie Mellon University Press authors, along with information on campus and off-campus readings and places for students to submit their work.
Both the receptions for visiting writers and our student readings are held in the Center throughout the year. The Center also serves as a social space for students to congregate in close proximity to faculty members. The offices of most of the creative writing faculty members circle the center space and make faculty more accessible to the students. Coffee and tea are available in the Center. We our proud of our community of writers, and the Schmitt Center is the heart of that community.
